A forum in Sydney on 2 June brought together close to 70 academics, development practitioners, and policy makers to discuss how the development community can work together to best influence and inform the take up of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in our region.

The full-day forum, The SDGs in the Asia-Pacific: A shared agenda for action, was co-organised by the RDI Network, Sydney-based universities – University of Technology Sydney, University of NSW and University of Sydney – and SDSN Australia/Pacific.

Keynote speakers Patricia Sachs-Cornish (Pacific Community) and Dr Yanuar Nugroho (Executive Office of the President of Indonesia) provided critical background on the reality of challenges and opportunities associated with the implementation of the SDGS agenda in the region.

This context provided a backdrop for in-depth breakout group discussions on the role, challenges and opportunities for the Australian development community in addressing key aspects of the SDGs, including:

  • Integration within the SDG framework
  • Monitoring the SDGs
  • Pathways and prioritisation for development
  • Growing inequality
  • Aid and development in a globalised world

The workshop ended with a “call to action” for specific projects and initiatives the Sydney-based development community can work on collaboratively to help achieve the SDGs in our region.
